Richard Wastrom, Senior Managing Director, is a founding partner of Smith Hanley Associates. As the co-manager of the Financial Strategies Group (FSG), he directs searches in both the Institutional Investment and Alternative Investment Management communities. His work encompasses a broad range of directives including chief investment officers, chief financial officers, chief information officers, as well as roles within single and multifamily offices. Additional mandates involve investment research strategists, risk managers, and quantitative portfolio managers (as noted by Emanuel Derman in his memoir, My Life As A Quant). Mr. Wastrom’s depth of experience and long-term relationships in the dynamic financial markets field have yielded proven expertise, respect and success.
He received his BA in business administration from the University of Vermont.
A partner at Smith Hanley Associates, Jud has been with the firm since 1995. Having more than eighteen years of experience in the field of portfolio management and technology recruitment for the financial industry, he fulfills both contingent and retained searches.
Jud has worked in all facets of quantitative research and trading recruitment from individual portfolio managers to the establishment of several new systematic global hedge funds, managing billions in client capital. He has also filled a plethora of quantitative and technical roles. From the chief technology officer of a $10BB hedge fund, to the lead developers and quantitative analysts of countless trading desks at the world’s leading investment banks and hedge funds, Jud’s vast network of connections offers both clients and applicants an experienced and informed resource in the global market.
A 1993 graduate of Hobart College, Jud has a Bachelor of Science in political science.
With Smith Hanley Associates since 2000, Deirdre has over 20 years of recruitment experience covering a diverse range of searches in the financial services sector for institutional asset managers, investment banks and hedge funds. Recently she completed senior-level marketing and client service searches for alternative asset management clients. Other successful mandates have included sector-specific portfolio managers and distressed credit analysts. Deirdre is a graduate of the University of Connecticut.
Alan is an Executive Recruiter in the Financial Strategies Group of Smith Hanley Associates. He specializes in quantitative research, trading and technology placements for capital markets groups within investment banks and hedge funds. Alan has 14 years experience working on search mandates ranging from quantitative strategist and traders to chief technology officer and front office development and support. Alan is a graduate of Regis College in Denver.
David is a Director at Smith Hanley Associates LLC. Specializing in the field of technology and quantitative research, he is a member of the firm’s Financial Strategies Group. David’s understanding of the financial services industry enables him to identify and communicate with top information technology and quantitative research professionals with a proven record of impactful performance.
David’s client portfolio focuses on technology and quantitative research within hedge funds, investment management, and investment banking. He has fulfilled successful searches for managing directors, executive directors, directors, group heads, and other essential leadership positions responsible for major strategic initiatives focused on information technology.
Before David joined Smith Hanley Associates in September of 2010, he worked at The Mergis Group, where he was an executive recruiter in the accounting and finance divisions, and CT Partners, where he entered the financial services technology field.
A graduate of The University of Maryland with a degree in marketing, David is based in Smith Hanley’s Manhattan office at the Met Life Building, New York, NY.
Jed is a Senior Executive Recruiter in the Financial Strategies Group with Smith Hanley Associates. Jed’s expertise in alternative investment management, quantitative research and investment technology recruiting provides a unique resource to clients seeking to enhance critical operations. He focuses on serving hedge funds, institutional investment managers and investment banking clients, identifying management and senior executives of major operations and functions. Jed’s practice includes a specialization in finance, technology and research. Jed graduated from New York University in 2004 with a BS in Print Journalism and Media Ecology.
Specializing in the field of quantitative research and technology, Owen is a Recruiting Associate in our Financial Strategies Group. His background in quantitative research, investment technology and financial markets combined with his ability to identify and connect with quantitative professionals make him a valuable addition to the team. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Operations Management, and he received his M.S. in Finance from Manhattanville College. Owen is based out of our NYC office at 200 Park Ave.
Sean studied theatre performance at the University of Illinois – Chicago. What does theatre performance have to do with recruiting? He took on multiple roles as career consultant, interviewing assistant, sourcing coordinator and entry level talent advisor before landing his breakout part as a lead full desk recruiter at Smith Hanley Associates. He headlines as Practice Lead for Credit Risk Analytics while simultaneously performing the role of Casualty Actuarial Recruiter. Grateful for the ability to have met and worked with so many talented performers, Sean is passionate about helping analytics and actuarial professionals find their dream roles. Oh, and, yes, Sean still plays a host of different fictional characters every year on Chicago’s many stages in his free time.

Stefan joined Smith Hanley in March 2015. Previously, Stefan worked as a Benefits Advisor at Aon Hewitt specializing in benefits consulting, and participated in the large-scale medical benefits transition for former employees of several Fortune 100 companies. In this capacity, Stefan was a licensed broker in a number of states and developed expertise in a variety of insurance matters. This experience, along with his human resources concentration as an undergraduate, gives Stefan unique perspective on a broad range of credit and statistical topics. He has already developed strong communication and advisory skills, and is keenly interested in facilitating organizational development. Stefan holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resource management/personnel administration from the Tippie School of Business at the University of Iowa.
