Richard Wastrom, Financial Strategies

Richard Wastrom, Senior Managing Director, is a founding partner of Smith Hanley Associates.  As the co-manager of the Financial Strategies Group (FSG), he directs searches in both the Institutional Investment and Alternative Investment Management communities.  His work encompasses a broad range of directives including chief investment officers, chief financial officers, chief information officers, as well as roles within single and multifamily offices. Additional mandates involve investment research strategists, risk managers, and quantitative portfolio managers (as noted by Emanuel Derman in his memoir, My Life As A Quant). Mr. Wastrom’s depth of experience and long-term relationships in the dynamic financial markets field have yielded proven expertise, respect and success.

He received his BA in business administration from the University of Vermont.

Jud Smith, Financial Strategies

A partner at Smith Hanley Associates, Jud has been with the firm since 1995. Having more than eighteen years of experience in the field of portfolio management and technology recruitment for the financial industry, he fulfills both contingent and retained searches.

Jud has worked in all facets of quantitative research and trading recruitment from individual portfolio managers to the establishment of several new systematic global hedge funds, managing billions in client capital. He has also filled a plethora of quantitative and technical roles. From the chief technology officer of a $10BB hedge fund, to the lead developers and quantitative analysts of countless trading desks at the world’s leading investment banks and hedge funds, Jud’s vast network of connections offers both clients and applicants an experienced and informed resource in the global market.

A 1993 graduate of Hobart College, Jud has a Bachelor of Science in political science.

Jacque Paige, Quantitative Marketing

Leading, growing and managing the business analytic side of Smith Hanley since 1989, Jacque joined the firm after a five-year stint with General Mills.  She loves the entrepreneurial aspect of recruiting, and the energy and enthusiasm generated from working with her associates, clients and candidates.  The explosion of data and its use in marketing and business applications has grown her staff to 17 including recruiters specializing in data science, market research, direct and digital marketing, consumer credit, actuarial science and information technology.  Jacque enjoys attending schools with unusual mascot names.  She is a Boilermaker and a Tarheel having received a BS from Purdue and an MBA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Tom Hanley, President & CEO

Tom, President and CEO, co-founded Smith Hanley in 1980 with a fellow graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.  He has overseen the firm’s growth to 100 employees in five offices and their work with many of the top corporations and financial institutions in the United States.  He graduated cum laude with a JD in 1983 from the New York Law School.

Tom looks forward to the continued success of Smith Hanley and his role in providing great companies with great candidates.

Jed Ackermann, Financial Strategies

Jed is a Senior Executive Recruiter in the Financial Strategies Group with Smith Hanley Associates. Jed’s expertise in alternative investment management, quantitative research and investment technology recruiting provides a unique resource to clients seeking to enhance critical operations. He focuses on serving hedge funds, institutional investment managers and investment banking clients, identifying management and senior executives of major operations and functions. Jed’s practice includes a specialization in finance, technology and research. Jed graduated from New York University in 2004 with a BS in Print Journalism and Media Ecology.

Shirley Baron, Market Research

Shirley focuses on recruiting primary survey market research professionals. Her clients are Fortune 500 corporations, suppliers and management consulting firms, as well as firms in financial services, hospitality/travel, publishing, CPG, retail, and multimedia industries. Shirley’s in-depth knowledge of the industries and the recruiting process makes her a true consultant to both candidate and client. Before joining Smith Hanley, Shirley worked for three years in physician recruitment and has been with Smith Hanley for since 1997. She received her degree from the London School of Journalism in London, England.

And when she’s at the office, she does soup to nuts recruiting as team leader and executive recruiter for the marketing analytics and data science practice in the Midwest and South regions. She believes that the recipe for success involves working closely with both clients and candidates. Nancy knows that her clients have a lot on their plates and need recruiting assistance from a professional, so she focuses on serving up a menu of qualified candidates that fit her clients’ technical, industry and soft skill requirements. In her broad recruiting area, she hunts down cream of the crop candidates at all levels, from small potatoes to big enchiladas. Her overall assessment of her career at Smith Hanley? With Smith Hanley Associates since 2000, Deirdre has over 20 years of recruitment experience covering a diverse range of searches in the financial services sector for institutional asset managers, investment banks and hedge funds. Recently she completed senior-level marketing and client service searches for alternative asset management clients. Other successful mandates have included sector-specific portfolio managers and distressed credit analysts. Deirdre is a graduate of the University of Connecticut.

Stefan Lehtis, Financial Strategies

Stefan joined Smith Hanley in March 2015. Previously, Stefan worked as a Benefits Advisor at Aon Hewitt specializing in benefits consulting, and participated in the large-scale medical benefits transition for former employees of several Fortune 100 companies. In this capacity, Stefan was a licensed broker in a number of states and developed expertise in a variety of insurance matters. This experience, along with his human resources concentration as an undergraduate, gives Stefan unique perspective on a broad range of credit and statistical topics. He has already developed strong communication and advisory skills, and is keenly interested in facilitating organizational development. Stefan holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration, human resource management/personnel administration from the Tippie School of Business at the University of Iowa.

Sean joined Smith Hanley in January 2011. Previously, Sean worked as a lead recruiter specializing in the placement of entry-level candidates for one of the premier actuarial recruiting firms. Sean’s knowledge of the statistical and analytical insurance world has allowed him an easy transition to recruiting in credit analytics and risk management. Sean’s recruiting knowledge, human resources expertise and quantitative insight are now being leveraged to identify qualified candidates for specific credit roles. Sean considers his communications skills, his sense of urgency and initiative as critical strengths for building solid relationships in this tight-knit industry. Specializing in the field of quantitative research and technology, Owen is a Recruiting Associate in our Financial Strategies Group. His background in quantitative research, investment technology and financial markets combined with his ability to identify and connect with quantitative professionals make him a valuable addition to the team. He graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Operations Management, and he received his M.S. in Finance from Manhattanville College. Owen is based out of our NYC office at 200 Park Ave.

Eda Zullo, Pharmaceutical

Eda joined Smith Hanley Associates in 2000. Her relationships with her clients and candidates is one of personalized, knowledgeable service. Helping companies develop and build groups, and working with candidates throughout their careers, are the hallmarks of her recruiting practice.

Eda’s expertise is in the recruitment of pharmaceutical and biotech healthcare professionals in the quantitative and statistical area. Her practice is within the marketing analytics space that concentrates in marketing science, sales analytics, forecasting and promotion response.

Tracey started her recruiting career at Smith Hanley in 1984 establishing a successful nationwide biostatistics, SAS programming and Data Management permanent placement recruiting practice. After a brief retirement she is back to lead the Biostatistics practice with Nikki Quist. She has long term relationships with both clients and recruiters who value her industry knowledge, assessment skills and access to top candidates and jobs in pharma, biotech & CRO’s. She has been active in the professional societies and been an invited speaker at career forums for Biostatisticians. Tracey is looking forward expanding Smith Hanley’s clinical pharmaceutical recruiting services. A graduate of UW- Madison she started her career at Merrill Lynch before joining Smith Hanley.
