Glassdoor just ranked the 25 Highest Paying Jobs in America for 2016. Of the top 25, 8 were in the information technology area. Not only are these IT jobs high paying but only two other careers in the top 25 had more job openings.

Riff Shaheen and David Surreira, IT recruiters at Smith Hanley Associates, share their thoughts on these high paying IT job titles with their Glassdoor rankings noted.

4. Software Development Manager
Median Base Salary: $120,000
Number of Job Openings: 263

12. Applications Development Manager
Median Base Salary: $132,00
Number of Job Openings: 3,495

Smith Hanley recruiters see the above two positions as requiring virtually the same technology expertise. Even though the title includes manager, hands-on skills and being up-to-speed on the latest technology are what companies are looking for. The sharper your technology skills, and your people skills, the more opportunities there will be.

9. IT Manager
Median Base Salary: $120,000
Number of Job Openings: 3,152

25. Information Systems Manager
Median Base Salary: $106,000
Number of Job Openings: 147

There seem to be many more candidates for the above two positions in the marketplace. These positions are a critical need and a critical support function for most companies. People management skills are one of the defining qualities of the most successful candidates in this expertise.

10. Solutions Architect
Median Base Salary: $120,000
Number of Job Openings: 2,838

14. Systems Architect
Median Base Salary: $116,920
Number of Job Openings: 439

While the two positions above are very different they are both in the highest demand in the marketplace. Smith Hanley feels these median base salaries are very low. We see these positions paying in the $140K to $175K range with a median of $150K. Often candidates move from the development area to an architect/design role and the increased depth and maturity of their skills warrant the higher compensation. Pre-sales experience is also highly sought after. Demand is so strong some visa issue candidates are being pursued.

7. Software Architect
Median Base Salary: $128,250
Number of Job Openings: 655

Sotfware Architects are very technology proficient candidates in great demand at large companies to manage the most complex projects. Salary range quoted here only applies for low cost-of-living areas. Our median would be $145K.

20. Data Architect
Median Base Salary: $113,000
Number of Job Openings: 762

Here again, the median base salary for Data Architects is out of line with our experience. Data Architects can command base salaries of $120K to $150k.
